I didn't, and it caused the automatic install to drop out of the process for me to enter a valid computer name. Thanks Continuum, if you use that page, on the step that lets you type in a computer name to replace 'Workstation', you may want to enter the name in quotes. That's the easiest guide I've found so far.

I'm making speculation here, just trying to figure out this strange behavior.īefore settling on this webpage to integrate the needed drivers into the slipstreamed cd. Maybe all ATA and SATA drives, once detected and configured by the controller they are attached to, are made visible to the legacy BIOS which in turns make them visible as "generic ATA" devices to other SATA controllers (even though they are not physically attached to them and not handled by them), but I find this weird and confusing. Why do the SATA drives connected to the ICH9 controlled ports are enumerated in the JMicron section?! the drives are connected to the yellow ports (ICH9). How does Intel ICH9 SATA configuration influence the boot process (right from the beginning, not at the OS booting stage), when no boot device are connected to the ports controlled by Intel ICH9 and the boot device priority set to boot from an ATA drive connected to another controller (the JMicron one) !!? In the past, I have used many different controllers and boot configuration (IDE, SCSI, RAID SCSI, 1394 drives, booting from ethernet, etc) and I have never seen similar "interference" problems between different controllers. why AHCI configuration has an influence on the P-ATA (not S-ATA) drive, which is my boot device. I had no problem installing windows xp and linux (except that grub boot manager which seems to have problems finding the second stage loader when the JMicron controller is NOT in AHCI mode). Thanks prototyped, but I'm not sure you are addressing my questions. Windows XP needs to either be installed with the SATA ports in AHCI mode and using the "F6 floppy" carrying the AHCI/RAID drivers during installation (installing the Windows drivers after Windows installation does not help in and of itself Windows needs to "see" the controller in AHCI mode once before it can boot off it), or needs to be moved to the JMicron ports, then the drivers installed, then moved back to the ICH9R/ICH9DO. So, I'm really wondering whether the 'yellow' ports on my boards are really controlled by the ICH9, or by the JMicron/Gigabyte controller? the two 500 GB drives, connected to SATA ports handled by the ICH9 controller, are reported in the drive enumeration from the Gigabyte SATA controller BIOS!!!Īnd these two 500 GB drives were not visible in windows until I installed Gigabyte drivers for the Gigabyte controller, although these two drives are supposed to be controlled by the ICH9 controller (for which the Intel drivers were installed from the start). More precisely, enabling RAID or AHCI for the ICH9 controller prevent windows XP from booting. two 500 GB drives, and one SATA optical drive are connected to the ICH9 SATA ports. I have one 200 GB ATA drive on the ATA port (which is supposed to be handled by the JMicron/Gigabyte onboard controller, not the Intel ICH9 southbridge).
